Sun regained the title she won in 2023 with Lin winning another all-Chinese final in the first Grand Smash events of the year.
Sun Yingsha and Lin Shidong seized the first table tennis Grand Smash titles of the year at the Singapore Smash 2025 on Sunday (9 February).
Women’s world number one Sun opened the year with a commanding 4-1 (11-8, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-6) win over Kuai Man.
Kuai was seeking a triple crown of titles in Singapore’s Infinity Arena after winning the mixed doubles (with Lin Shidong), and teaming up with Wang Manyu to beat Sun and Wang Yidi in the women’s doubles final.
But Sun exacted revenge in the singles final, regaining the crown she won in 2023 and claiming a third career Smash singles title.
Lin succeeded where Kuai failed by taking the men’s singles to complete his own triple crown. The 19-year-old won a thrilling battle with Liang Jingkun, coming out on top 4-2 (9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 6-11, 11-3, 11-2) to become world number one for the first time.
On Saturday, Lin and Wang Chuqin swept aside Chinese Taipei’s Kao Cheng-Jui and Lin Yun-Ju to take the men’s doubles title.
Sun Yingsha keeps cool to seize Singapore title
Having won two golds and singles silver at Paris 2024, Sun is the woman to beat in table tennis with two-time reigning Olympic singles champion Chen Meng quitting international play.
Sun took the first game before 20-year-old left-hander Kuai – who has been a revelation in Singapore – levelled at 1-1.
Despite being shown a yellow card for delaying the start of the third game, world number one Sun was unfazed and won the next three games without reply for her first singles title of the year.
Lin Shidong continues meteoric rise with Singapore success

At just 19, he has reached the top of the men’s rankings after a hard-fought final against fellow Chinese Liang.
Lin dropped a tight opening game but won the next two. World number four Liang was matching his pace and levelled at two games apiece.
Having had to fight hard to get back into the match, Lin eventually found his flow and dropped a total of just five points in the final two games. This was the second Grand Smash singles title of his career, having triumphed on home soil at the 2024 China Smash.
