Singapore’s Nurulasyiqah Wins First Individual Boccia World Cup Medal in Beijing

Paralympian and veteran boccia athlete Nurulasyiqah Mohd Taha clinched her first individual World Cup medal in the BC3 Female Individual event at the Beijing 2025 World Boccia Cup on Thursday (June 12).

Remarkably, the bronze is Nurulasyiqah’s first individual accolade at a World Cup event in her 21-year career, having won Singapore’s first World Cup pairs medal last August in Chinese Taipei together with BC3 boccia athlete Aloysius Gan.

“I’m incredibly grateful to my ramp operator and athlete competition partner, Nur Azizah, who has been training with me patiently since 2017. This bronze medal is as much hers as it is mine,” she said.

The world no.24’s journey to breaking her individual medal duck at the prestigious World Cup event was far from straightforward as she succumbed to a narrow tie-break loss in her opener and had to face a series of Paralympic medallists along the way.

But the 40-year-old was unfazed in the face of more illustrious opponents.

After a narrow 4-4 tie-break loss to world no. 4 Sonia Heckel, Nurulasyiqah bounced back with a commanding 6-1 win over Brazil’s Evani Calado to book her spot in the quarterfinals. There, she edged out reigning Paralympic silver medallist Jamieson Leeson 5-3.

Though she fell 5-1 in the semifinals to South Korea’s Kang Sunhee, Nurulasyiqah quickly regrouped to upset world No. 1 and reigning Paralympic champion Yuen Kei Ho, earning a hard-fought bronze.

However, the champagne is on ice for Nurulasyiqah, who will have to turn her focus to the doubles competition. She is set to join forces with Gan, who finished fourth in the BC3 individual category.

“I haven’t had much time to fully process the win, as we had to gear up for our first BC3 Pairs match just a few hours after the individual bronze medal match. Once we return from this tournament, our focus will be on sustaining the skills and momentum we’ve built,” she said, as the pair gears up for their doubles campaign, taking place from June 7 to 15.
