Aug 31 2024 – Singapore Premier League (SPL) title challengers BG Tampines Rovers were held to a frustrating stalemate by a stubborn Hougang United at the Jalan Besar Stadium last evening.
Ensar Brunčević’s first goal of the 24/25 Singapore Premier League (SPL) season gave the Cheetahs the lead, before Seia Kunori levelled things just before half time. Marko Kraljević’s side continued to frustrate the visitors in the second-half before drama ensued in the last 10 minutes of the game.
Substitute Taufik Suparno was shown a straight red for a punch on the back of Stjepan Plazonja following a tackle, and Hougang’s Ismail Salihovic was also shown the marching orders for a second yellow just minutes after.
The on-pitch incidents also spilled over to the fans. Based on accounts present at the Jalan Besar Stadium, as well as a video submitted to Grandstand Singapore, 2 Hougang supporters were seen rushing towards the away end as they confronted the Tampines fans, following Taufik’s sending off in the 86th minute.
According to a Tampines fan present, the entire incident lasted till the final whistle and they ‘did not get to watch the match finish’ and the unhappiness between both sets of fans were likely triggered based on Taufik’s gestures while walking off the pitch after being repeated touted by the Hougang supporters.
️Stadium security and ushers had to step in to separate the two parties as barricades was later put up to split both sets of fans. It is also understood that Tampines fans had to wait more than 5 minutes after the final whistle, before they were allowed to leave from the alternate exit at Jalan Besar South.
At the point of writing, Hougang and FAS have not issued any statement regarding the matter.
Just last month, Tanjong Pagar United lodged an official complaint to the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) over an alleged racial abuse by fans during their SPL game with Geylang International. Both clubs, fan groups and the player involved has since reconciled, while the FAS are still investigating on the case.
The results meant Hougang maintain their impressive unbeaten home run since June 21, while Gavin Lee’s side stay in pole after second-placed Sailors were held to a 2-2 draw by Geylang International.
