1. Ilhan Fandi recalled back to National Team, replaces Shawal Anuar
Guess who’s back? The 21-year old striker has been called back to the Singapore Men’s National Team by Head Coach Tsutomu Ogura. The Deinze forward, who was a surprise omission in Ogura’s initial squad released, was spotted in training earlier on the first day of the Lions’ centralised training.
He replaces Lion City Sailors striker Shawal Anuar who has withdrawn from the squad as his expectant wife is due to deliver his third child in June. The Lions will face South Korea next Thursday for their World Cup Qualifiers game in a sold-out National Stadium.
2. Zivkovic out, Thy in
Big spenders Lion City Sailors are back it again.
Just a day after announcing the departure of Richairo Živković by mutual consent, the Singapore Premier League (SPL) side confirmed the signing of Lennart Thy from Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle.
The 32-year-old was the club’s top goal scorer with 13 goals in 32 games in the recently concluded season, where they finished 12th in the table – with appearances against new Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot’s Feyenoord and also recording a brace against Ajax.
3. First female General Manager appointment in the SPL
The Eagles are making moves this season – both on and off the pitch.
Geylang International has appointed Bernice Wong as the team’s General Manager, taking over the reigns from Sean Bai, who has left for Burnley earlier in April, becoming the first woman to do so.
The 35-year old’s involvement with the club started just last year, as she became Geylang’s photographer in 2023; before eventually expanding her role as the Media head. Find out more about her journey here.
4. Singapore Badminton Open is back
Fresh from securing his ticket to the Paris Olympics, Loh Kean Yew is also vying for silverware at the KFF Singapore Badminton Open 2024. The 26-year-old will next next face China’s world No. 6 Li Shifeng in the quarter-finals today (31 May 2024).
The 73rd edition of the tournament is ongoing from 28 May to 2 June at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, with a total prize money of US$850,000.
5. Red Bull give you wings, and an internship
Two Singaporeans have earned a 2-month internship with the Oracle Red Bull Racing Team – the reigning Formula 1 constructors’ champions – at Milton Keynes in Britain.
Charis Chua, 22 and Heng Yi-Hsin, 21 – both undergraduates at the Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI) were amongst thousands of applicants from Singapore.
The selection process includes a personality evaluation, video submission, virtual interview and case-study challenge. The final results were delivered by the reigning Formula One world champion, Max Verstappen himself.
After their overseas stint, the duo will return to the Republic to work with the team at the Sept 20-22 Singapore Grand Prix.
